Methods of Reading読みの方法論
Bazen Sanmei practices four methods of reading, inherited from the classics and re-established for the contemporary reader: Dual-Lens Reading, Relational Interpretation, Classical Return, and Non-Prescriptive Reading. These are not techniques added to chart analysis, but the very posture of how one reads — the fourfold path that distinguishes Bazen Sanmei from other schools.
両義的解釈りょうぎてきかいしゃくDual-Lens Reading
The method of always reading Overcoming relationships through both destructive and generative lenses.
Overcoming is not only destruction. When Metal overcomes Wood, the classics speak of 琢磨成器 (polishing wood into a vessel). When Fire overcomes Metal, 百煉成鋼 (a hundredfold tempering into steel). When Water overcomes Fire, the I Ching's 水火既済 (the completion of harmony) (see the chapter on Relationships). Dual-Lens Reading is the method of bringing this duality into the actual act of reading. When a chart contains Metal overcoming Wood, two readings are offered: · The destructive lens: the tree is cut, something is lost · The generative lens: the tree is polished into a vessel With only one lens, the depth of the classics cannot be reached. Both are presented; the reader chooses which resonates with their experience. This is the method of recovering, in language accessible to the contemporary reader, the perspective that the classics (Di Tian Sui, I Ching) already carried. Dual-Lens Reading returns the chart from "a scorecard of fortune" to "a topography of transformation."
関係的解釈かんけいてきかいしゃくRelational Interpretation
The stance that the meaning of a phenomenon resides not in the phenomenon itself, but only in its relationship with the birth chart.
The same Water Triad Formation carries entirely different meaning depending on the chart. · For a chart abundant in water: a time of further deepening · For a chart strong in fire: a time when heat is cooled · For a chart of wood: a time when nurturing waters flow in There is no universal prediction that says "the season of water brings X to all." Phenomena move as they move, but what they bring to you is decided only within the relationship to your chart. Relational Interpretation is the method that dismantles the greatest trap of divinatory thought — the universal prediction. The same Void Period, the same Grand Half Harmony, the same Heavenly Clash and Earthly Opposition — all shift entirely in meaning depending on the chart. Never read a phenomenon in isolation; always read it within its relationship to the chart. This posture is the contemporary expression of what the classical Di Tian Sui calls "observing the flow of qi."
古典回帰こてんかいきClassical Return
The method of returning to the original classical texts to recover the depth that modern simplifications have lost.
Many modern books on BaZi and Sanmei have drastically abbreviated the classics. Stock phrases like "during Void Periods, do not act" circulate as received wisdom. Yet returning to the classical sources, the Void Period is described far more neutrally and richly — as "a time when outward connections thin, and inner currents intensify." Classical Return is the method of recovering this lost depth. The four classical texts — Di Tian Sui, Zi Ping Zhen Quan, San Ming Tong Hui, Qiong Tong Bao Jian — together with their philosophical ground, the I Ching. These were compiled during the Ming and Qing dynasties as the crystallization of destiny analysis, the work of scholars and statesmen such as Liu Bowen, Shen Xiaozhan, Wan Yuwu, Chen Suan, and Ren Tiejiao. What they left behind is not the short formulas of popular fortune-telling books. It is a vast attempt to read human beings and nature, woven from poetry, metaphor, and rigorous logic. Classical Return is the work of opening this attempt anew for the present.
非指示的読解ひしじてきどっかいNon-Prescriptive Reading
The posture of offering only perspectives, never prescriptions for action.
We do not say "you should do this." We say only "this can also be seen as this." Non-Prescriptive Reading is the method of releasing the "instructional" structure deeply rooted in divinatory practice. Traditional fortune-telling has established an asymmetry between the one who knows and the one who is taught. Non-Prescriptive Reading dissolves that asymmetry. The birth chart is your blueprint. How you read it, how you live it, is yours to decide. What Bazen Sanmei offers is only the perspectives for reading — multiple possibilities, multiple lenses, multiple interpretations. From among these, you yourself choose what resonates with your life. This is wisdom for those who live autonomously — the foundational posture of Bazen Sanmei. The chart is not a tool of fortune-telling. It is a mirror for the dialogue you hold with yourself.
The Bazen Perspective · 芭禅算命学の視点
The four methods — Dual-Lens Reading, Relational Interpretation, Classical Return, Non-Prescriptive Reading — are not separate techniques. They are four faces of a single posture. The chart carries no fortune. Phenomena carry no fixed meaning. The classics carry depths that have been lost. Reading is not prescription but the offering of perspective. Together, these methods restore BaZi and Sanmei from "a tool for predicting fate" to "a language for reading the self." Bazen Sanmei, grounded in the classics, keeps this work open for the contemporary reader.
