The Twelve Vice Stars十二大従星

The Twelve Vice Stars are a classification of spiritual energies distinctive to Sanmeigaku. Likened to the twelve stages of a human life — from fetus to death, and on to rebirth — each stage's energy is systematized as a single star. They correspond to the Twelve Fortunes of BaZi, yet were refined into their own distinctive form within Japan. They indicate the quality of the life-stage energy one was born with.

天報星てんぽうせいHeavenly Fetus Star

The star of the fetus. A state in which all possibilities are undifferentiated within.

Heavenly Fetus Star corresponds to the beginning of the twelvefold cycle — the stage of the fetus. The stage before any form, holding all possibilities within. A person with this star is varied and rich in change. Not fitting into one form, the flexibility of showing various faces according to circumstance becomes the feature. Because one is not yet anyone, one can become anyone — this is the energy of Heavenly Fetus Star. Yet because it is undifferentiated, direction can be hard to fix. When one becomes aware of what to focus on, the possibility of this star comes into bloom.

天印星てんいんせいHeavenly Seal Star

The star of the newborn. Purity and the gift of being loved.

Heavenly Seal Star corresponds to the stage of the newborn. The pure energy of first touching the world. A person with this star is forthright and charming, naturally loved by others. A purity without calculation, an approachability without boundaries, a softness that preserves the heart of a child — these become features. Yet because protection is readily received, independence may come late. The essence of this star is "the quality of being loved" — itself a fortunate gift.

天貴星てんきせいHeavenly Nobility Star

The star of early childhood. Innocent curiosity and brightness.

Heavenly Nobility Star corresponds to the energy of early childhood. The bright stage of discovering the world and playing through it. A person with this star carries innocent curiosity, a bright disposition, and a bearing of natural dignity. As the character 貴 (noble) suggests, a natural dignity and a cheerful trust in the world become features. There is the power to brighten surroundings. To keep the heart of a child while carrying a mature nobility — this is the interest of Heavenly Nobility Star.

天恍星てんこうせいHeavenly Reverie Star

The star of adolescence. The force of longing and reverie.

Heavenly Reverie Star corresponds to the energy of adolescence. A time of dreaming of the future, longing for love, heart stirred by ideals. A person with this star is romantic and rich in sensitivity, carrying artistic sensibility and the power of dreaming. Imagination that exceeds the frame of reality, sensitivity to beauty, an atmosphere that charms others — these become features. Yet one may suffer the gap between dream and reality. When this star's sensibility meets reality, it bears fruit as art and expression.

天南星てんなんせいSouthern Sky Star

The star of youth. The force of action and challenge.

Southern Sky Star corresponds to the energy of youth. The stage of going out into the world, acting, and testing oneself. A person with this star is active and energetic, carrying strength that does not fear new challenges. Capacity for action, adventurous spirit, momentum of moving forward — these become features. Holding the momentum of youth itself throughout life — this is Southern Sky Star. Even in maturity, some fire of youth remains, and one keeps moving.

天禄星てんろくせいHeavenly Stipend Star

The star of prime adulthood. The force of stability and establishment.

Heavenly Stipend Star corresponds to the energy of prime adulthood. The stage of establishing one's place within society and building a stable foundation. A person with this star is steady and responsible, considering things from a long-term view. The force of continuously building up, the steadfastness of arranging foundations, qualities that earn trust within organizations — these become features. "Stipend" signifies steady compensation. Heavenly Stipend Star symbolizes the force of gaining certain fruit through diligent effort.

天将星てんしょうせいHeavenly General Star

The star of the life's peak. The force of command and authority.

Heavenly General Star is said to hold the strongest energy among the twelve stages. It corresponds to the peak of life, the stage of leading people as a general. A person with this star has authority and the power to command, with a great vessel that gathers much within it. Leadership, decisiveness, the strength to overcome difficulty — these become features. Yet because the energy is strong, friction with surroundings can arise. Heavenly General Star reveals its true worth when its use is found. On a stage that matches the size of the vessel, its native power comes into bloom.

天堂星てんどうせいHeavenly Hall Star

The star of old age. Wisdom and tranquility.

Heavenly Hall Star corresponds to old age. The tranquil stage after the peak, when wisdom and experience have been gathered. A person with this star is tranquil and thoughtful, carrying an atmosphere of maturity even when young. Calm judgment, a vantage that sees from above, a quiet dignity — these become features. Without the brilliance of the peak, there is deep wisdom and stability. Heavenly Hall Star embodies a maturity beyond age.

天胡星てんこせいHeavenly Illness Star

The star of illness. Delicacy and spiritual depth.

Heavenly Illness Star corresponds to the stage of illness and weakness in life. Yet this does not mean simply "a star that brings illness." A person with this star is delicate and sharply sensitive, carrying deep interest in the spiritual realm. Artistic talent, spiritual sense, inner richness gained in exchange for bodily weakness — these become features. Classically seen as a star of weakness, yet that very delicacy nurtures art and spirituality. Heavenly Illness Star holds an inner depth different from worldly strength.

天極星てんきょくせいHeavenly Zenith Star

The star of death. The force of release and new beginning.

Heavenly Zenith Star corresponds to "death" in the twelve stages. Yet it is not a simple ending, but the dissolution of one form and the turn toward a new form. A person with this star carries a freedom that is not bound by existing frames, a clean willingness to let go, a power of regeneration. Lightness of attachment, a gift for letting go, a spirit unafraid of change — these become features. Death is an ending, and at the same time a beginning. Heavenly Zenith Star embodies this duality. By letting something go, one finds a new self.

天庫星てんこせいHeavenly Repository Star

The star of the tomb. The force of deep storage and inheritance.

Heavenly Repository Star corresponds to the "tomb" in the twelve stages. The stage in which the activities of life are quietly gathered and passed on to the next generation. Note: This star is pronounced the same as Heavenly Illness Star (天胡星) — both tenkosei — but the meanings and characters differ. They are distinguished by context. A person with this star carries the force of deep inward storage, a posture of honoring the past, a sense of responsibility to preserve tradition and lineage. Collecting habits, diligent research, sensitivity to history and inheritance — these become features. The tomb is not an ending but a place of accumulation. Heavenly Repository Star functions as the vessel for wisdom that crosses generations.

天馳星てんそうせいHeavenly Galloping Star

The star of the soul. The force of freedom and change.

Heavenly Galloping Star corresponds to "severance" (絶) in the twelve stages — the stage released from all. It is the end of the cycle, and at the same time the bridge to the next cycle. A person with this star is free and rich in change, unable to stay still. Movement, change, curiosity for new worlds, lightness of attachment — these become features. Common in travelers, those in mobile professions, and those who continually take on what is new. Heavenly Galloping Star is the star of the soul, settling nowhere. Its lightness keeps bringing fresh winds into life.

The Bazen Perspective · 芭禅算命学の視点

The Twelve Vice Stars are a distinctive perspective of Sanmeigaku, systematizing a human life as twelve stages of energy. What matters here is that these stars do not indicate "the strength or weakness of fortune." There was once a reading that circulated, such as "Heavenly General Star brings strong fortune; Heavenly Zenith and Heavenly Galloping Stars bring weak fortune." This distorts the original meaning of the Twelve Vice Stars. The Twelve Vice Stars indicate the quality of the energy one was born with, and the character of one's life stages. The flexibility of the fetus, the purity of the newborn, the action of youth, the stability of prime adulthood, the wisdom of old age, the release of death, the freedom of the soul — these are all equal, with no hierarchy. By which star inhabits which pillar in the chart, it is revealed what kind of energy is at work in which stage of the person's life. Not a fixed destiny, but a map of the quality of one's innate energy — this is how the Twelve Vice Stars are handled in Bazen Sanmei.
